Springtail - Hypogastrura

Springtail - Hypogastrura
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
January 12, 2008
Size: much less than 1 mm
Was looking to take some photos of some other critters and saw some small grey specks moving, so I decided to take some pics and see if I could tell what they were when I got them in on the computer to blow up the images a little. Even blowing up the images a *lot*, they're still really small!! I will try to get a few of these guys under the microscope in the next couple days and see if I can't get a slight bigger image yet.

Hypogastrura sp.
Given the small size and deep blue body colour.
Family = Hypogastruridae.

what do I need for pics?
Thanks, as always, for the help IDing. If I can get a couple of these guys under the microscope in the next couple days, I will. What specifically should I look for in taking some pictures through the scope?

There is a key...
... to the genera of Hypogastrura at http://www.collembola.org/key/hypoidae.
You might want to use that key as a guide to make pictures of the needed characters to key out the genus.

Take a look at the images starting here.

didn't realize these...
guys were springtails also. Much different size and look to them. The more I think I learn, the more I realize I don't know! Sheesh.
