fly larva

fly larva
Randolph, Massachusetts, USA
April 27, 2005
Size: 5-6mm

Not so fast:-)
This reminds me much more of a fly larva.

larva
I found this under some bark, and there were a few tiny beetles on that log, so I thought maybe they were related.

probably lonchaeid larva
The chances are that this is the larva of a lonchaeid fly. Most of them live behind bark of dead trees where they predate on larvae of bark beetles and the like. Some of them even can be considered to be beneficial insects.
