Ichneumon (Sphex) at hole in sand - Sphex ichneumoneus

Ichneumon (Sphex) at hole in sand - Sphex ichneumoneus
Old Orchard Beach, Maine, USA
August 9, 2006
Size: 2 cm
This solitary wasp was very actively moving about the area, between the hole in the sand and nearby vegetation. This image shows what might be 2 items of prey. Location was a trail around the lake at Ferry beach SP, near the boardwalk.

Looks like it!
I agree that it could be a Great Golden Digger Wasp. Any comments on the 2 dead insects nearby?

I will look again...
when i get home. I am at work and on my Treo right now. I think the image will be a little more clear on a larger monitor.

My initial thought...
is Great Golden Digger Wasp (Sphex ichneumoneus). Take a look there a see if it looks like a match.

Hope this helps!
