Oniscus asellus? - Oniscus asellus
Haydenville, Hampshire County, foothills of the Berkshire Mountains (western Massachusetts) County, Massachusetts, USA
November 9, 2006
Size: roughly 1 centimeter
Found under a log in the position shown in the photo. This one didn't scurry away, but others (almost certainly of the same species) did. Please take my size estimate of 1 centimeter as an approximation--I did not measure it at the time, so I'm relying on my memory. I have no reason to believe this species is uncommon in my area; I've just never tried to I.D. an isopod before, and would appreciate any help you are able to offer. Using an online key to isopods of Ohio (http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/7649/woodlice/ohio_key.htm), I tentatively keyed it out to Oniscus asellus.

I agree, there are variations in color so it compares well with black version Photo#84193 as well as brown Photo#97549.
