Wasp nest - Dolichovespula

Wasp nest - Dolichovespula
Prospect Park, Kings County, New York, USA
January 20, 2008
Size: Volleyball
Saw this old nest in a tree yesterday, very close to volleyball sized and relatively spherical. Anyone want to habit a guess as to what built it?

hornet nest
Most likley the bald faced hornet.I see these often along my creek. Suprisingly they are fairly mellow, until you mess with the nest. I had a nice nest built under the eves of my front porch-no one ever got stung.

I'd
say it was built by D. maculata, the bald faced hornet, but it could also be from D. arenaria, the aerial yellowjacket.
