Ampedus cordifer

Ampedus cordifer
Ash Mountain, 2800' elev., Tulare County, California, USA
March 12, 1983
Size: ca. 9 mm.
Here's a specimen from the Sierra Nevadas. The two little sub-basal spots are typical of this species, but are also seen in others. The best character for separating it from the other elaters with cordate markings is that the "heart" only touches the margin at the apex of the elytra (not along the sides). Typically the ground color of the elytra is a nice yellow-orange and not the brownish-orange of some other species.

Thanks again
Thanks again Dennis for the great contributions!

As I go through the unknowns
As I go through the unknowns I thought it would be good to post some California material. Today is raining and I'm stuck in the office.
