Appledore Earwigs - Anisolabis maritima - female

Appledore Earwigs - Anisolabis maritima - Female
Appledore Island in the Isles of Shoals, Maine, USA
August 21, 2007
Size: 3/4 of an inch - 1 inch
During the summer of 2007, I was privileged enough to take a week-long course out on Appledore Island in the Isles of Shoals, off the coast of New Hampshire & Maine (Appledore is the largest island & is on Maine's side of the border.)

Underneath the racks of seaweed tossed high up on shore to rot were dozens of wingless earwigs.
The females (shown) were slender with cerci/pincers shaped like forceps. The larger, more robust males had these thick, strongly curved pincers. Both genders were incredibly active after being disturbed. The reason for my hand's obscuring the picture was I had to pin down the animal so it I could have the chance to document it.
They were very fast & I never had the chance to see one standing still long enough for me to photo graph it.
