Size: 12-15 mm wing length
This species is known as the pitch mass borer and attacks pine and spruce species in the northeastern United States. It is found rarely in insect collections and museums. Trees with active larvae have pitch mass swellings on the tree trunk with a white, powdery appearance. The males are strongly attracted to ZZOH/EZOH 50:50 pheromone lures and are on the wing starting in late June in Michigan. This photograph is from "A Guide to the Clearwing Borers(Sesiidae) of the North Central United States" North Central Regional Publication No. 394, Updated March 2004 by William Taft, Dave Smitley and J.W.
