Grasshopper - Melanoplus femurrubrum

Grasshopper - Melanoplus femurrubrum
Boston, Massachusetts, USA
November 13, 2005
A fairly non-descript grasshopper, I think, but perhaps a very common one : I have little or no info on North-American Grasshoppers. I do not remember the size, but I believe it was neither very small nor very large.

Melanoplus femurrubrum probably
Definitely a female Melanoplus, but it is not absolutely certain that it is this species, though I'm fairly sure.

The picture does show the red clearly, but - well - that's not that diagnostic, since most of its close relatives can also have red hind tibiae (and occasionally they aren't red on this species). Even so, it does reinforce the impression that it is M. femurrubrum. Females are often not possible to identify with 100% certaintly, at least not without having them in hand and disecting the genitalia (and I'm not sure these parts are well enough documented for even that to help). The rear view of the males is the best (showing cerci, subgenital plate, etc.). Even so, I think I'd go with about 95% (or better) certaintly on this one now, simply because I know the species well.

Thanks
Again, thank you very much, David, for your elaborate replies.
Cheers
Philippe
