Chrysalis

Chrysalis
Sand Springs, Osage County, Oklahoma, USA
January 27, 2008
Size: 13mm (1/2")
Found under a piece of old tree. Notice in this pic it's in some sort of debris covering. The second pic is the underside after I pulled it loose from the wood. Notice the white liquid which I think was somehow surrounding it while it was inside the debris covering because it didn't come from inside the chrysalis itself. The third pic is the chrysalis after I removed the debris covering. Please help with ID.

I agree with Charley, until we get a confirmation that this is the ONLY species to make this structure, the images should be kept at a higher level.

...
This may well be the same species as Scott's that just emerged, but I think there are other noctuids that make something similar.

Interesting...
I've been finding these debris coverings on trees lately, but in all of them the insect had already emerged (or been eaten). I had been thinking it could be either a moth or a beetle, but that sure looks like a moth pupa. This would be a great one to hang onto and see what emerges.

I'll let you know if I turn up any suspects when I start diving into my moth books.

Well
hanging onto it is a problem. I live out in the country. Most of the pics I take are out in the woods so it would be next to impossible to find it again. I don't even remember how deep in the woods (away from the house) I was when I found it. When I find things I take pictures of it and then try to put it back the way I found it and leave it there. Obviously in this case I couldn't put it back the way it was but I did leave it there.
