Entomobrya multifasciata? - Entomobrya atrocincta - Female
Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County, California, USA
February 2, 2008
Size: 1mm
Netted while walking on water (the springtail, not me!), so I could get a better shot. Hoping to get confirmation on the ID before I log it as such.

Entomobrya atrocincta, female
Recently a study was published on the sexual dimorphism of Entomobrya atrocinta. It turns out that the pigmentation pattern of the female E. atrocincta matches well with that of E. multifasciata. The most obvious difference between the female E. atrocincta and E. multifasciata is that in E. atrocincta the first thoracic segment (= the mesothorax) is white, while in E. multifasciata it is yellow as the other segments. Another characteristic for E. atrocincta is the anchorlike or arrowlike pattern between its eyes.

Conclusion: we have to reconsider our original ID: this is not E. multifasciata but the female of E. atrocincta.

The pattern between the eyes is certainly present!
I will move this to E. atrocincta, or failing that, up a level to Entomobrya!

Entomobrya multifaciata
Indeed, Mac. Well done.
It is not a common water surface walker, though. It must have fallen from a tree...

It certainly could have fallen from a tree....
An apricot tree hangs over the pond, and it had just begun sprinkling. Maybe it was dislodged by a drop of water that it never saw coming!
