These several "genera" together equate to the restricted "tribe Psychodini" of Ježek, and the genus Psychoda of Quate and of Bravo et al. They have been segregated from Psychoda (mostly by Ježek), and variously treated as genera, subgenera, or ignored, depending upon which author one chooses follow. In the Americas they have largely been listed as synonyms of Psychoda, but as something of a tentative compromise were treated as subgenera by Bravo et al [2006] and others since. Problems cited regarding recognition of subgenera include them being based on female and antennal traits only (or primarily); uncertainty as to significance of traits cited; and/or the several species that do not fit comfortably into any one of the several segregates.
Just how to treat them here is problematic, since they are treated differently in different databases that might be referenced.
Authorship for subgenera should be double-checked
Explanation of Names
Psychoda Latreille 1796 • type species: Tipula phalaenoides Linnaeus 1758
Numbers
worldwide, 55(1) to 400 spp.(2), depending on genus concept
Identification
Unlike most or all other members of subfamily Psychodinae which perch with wings flat, species in genus Psychoda perch with wings tented over the abdomen.
