Primitive Carrion Beetle - Necrophilus hydrophiloides

Primitive Carrion Beetle - Necrophilus hydrophiloides
Cool, El Dorado County, California, USA
December 18, 2007
Size: 12 mm
Found dead in spider web. At first I thought it was a cara*bid but the antennae were wrong. The head reminded me of a carrion beetle's. Then it struck me that this could be a so-called primitive carrion beetle, family Agyrtidae, a new family for me and a nice pre-Christmas gift.
