Carpet beetle, but what's that on his tail end? - Anthrenus verbasci Delta, British Columbia, Canada February 8, 2008 Size: 3 mm.
This is the underside of a carpet beetle I caught today. What is that contraption hanging at his tail end? In the first upside-down photos, it wasn't there. He was held down, lightly, by a glass slide, to keep him from flipping upright immediately. It didn't hurt him; when I removed it, he flipped and went about his business. An hour later, he was still lively.
