Platycheirus sp. - Platycheirus - male

Platycheirus sp. - Platycheirus - Male
Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, USA
May 7, 2005
Size: 1/2 inch
I am not sure if this is a melanostoma or not. The yellow blocks on the abdomen appear to be different in shape.

More likely Platycheirus!
Hello Matthew,
I think it is indeed not a male Melanostoma, because the shape of the spots is different and the size of the abdomen is broader.
This seems more likely a male of Platycheirus!
Since you have the specimen, you can check wheather its front legs are oddly shaped. Most of the male Platycheirus have different shaped front legs!
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards
