Caterpillar Found Conroe, Texas

Caterpillar Found Conroe, Texas
Conroe, Montgomery County, Texas, USA
February 12, 2008
Size: 1 inch
My children would really like to identify this friendly little guy. We rescued him from a rainstorm and would like to set him free near/on a host plant.

It's one of the cutworms or armyworms
in the Noctuidae, a notoriously difficult group. Noctua pronuba is a possibility, but we're all waiting for Wagner's new book on the Noctuid caterpillars to learn more about these fellas.
