Sow bug, pill bug, but doodle bug?
I'm with John and Jane on this ...this is the first time i've heard a pill bug called a doodle bug...I also grew up calling those backward walking, burrowing, predacious, little ant lion larvas doodle bugs...Bay Area California.

Interesting -
We have always heard the term doodle bug used to represent the larval stage of the antlion, see

Doodlebugs
Growing up in New Orleans, we always called these creatures "Doodle bugs". I can't swear this is the same species I remember from back then, but it's pretty close.

Stumbled upon this late...
Grew up in Alexandria, Louisiana (live near New Orleans now) and we always called these 'doodle bugs'...

We are always fascinated
by what are truly "common names" as opposed to the "official" English (and sometimes not-at-all common) names associated with species. Thanks
