Found in Sweet Acacia tree - Chrysobothris

Found in Sweet Acacia tree - Chrysobothris
Scottsdale, Mariopa County, Arizona, USA
February 21, 2008
Size: one quarter inch
I'm assuming this is a borer and would like to know its identity. It was found today in a Sweet Acacia tree. The head came off as I pulled him out. If I had known what a great photo op he would be, I would have been more careful when removing him. Darn.

Definitely Buprestidae...
...probably a species of Chrysobothris.

Thanks for the ID, Ted!
I had only seen black borers so the color surprised me.

Normally drab:-)
This specimen has also lost its elytra (wing covers), which are usually gray in color and hide the metallic abdomen.

missing elytra
I really appreciate the education I'm receiving here....thanks, Eric!
