Scathophaga sp? - Scathophaga - Male Female

I found your Scathophaga page (http://bugguide.net/node/view/8319/bgpage) and recognized these critters immediately; however, the photo(s) including the female on that page show a seemingly much more colourful female than this one. Is this a different species? Maybe it's just the lighting & the shadow cast by the male. Anyway, there are plenty of these around my Dad's place in the summer because there's LOTS of cow dung. We discovered these flies a couple of years ago, and were fascinated that such an unpleasant-tasked critter could be so beautiful. Ain't nature cool?!

Exquisite image of a magnificent specimen(s). Probably Scathophaga stercoraria, in fact. Thanks for sharing!

Glad to hear that's who it is. And thanks - I'm glad the photo is appreciated; I thought the colours and textures on the male were quite incredible and I was very pleased that that came through so well in the image.
