Mound ant - Solenopsis

Mound ant - Solenopsis
Brunswick, Georgia, USA
February 14, 2008
Size: 3 mm
This seemed to be the most common mound-making ant across Florida and southern Georgia. This ant was on a mound that was 50 cm across, 22 cm high.

Fire Ant (Solenopsis sp.) - worker
No wonder this species is ammong the most common. They are all too common across SE United States.

thanks
I suspected as much, having heard about how common fire ants are in the South, but it's nice to have confirmation. Thanks for your other recent ant IDs too. Do you by any chance have a source you'd recommend that illustrates/discusses mounds/nests of North American ants?
