I think...
I think this is Tabanus calens. The problem is a half-inch is a bit small, T. calens is closer to an inch long. Nevertheless the abdomen, thorax, wing, and basal plate match up.

I think...
That the measurement might be a bit off. Looking at the thumb which should be close to 1/2 wide (the actual thumb nail), I believe that this fly may be 3/4 to 1 inch in length. BTW, I agree on Tabanus calens.

I need to remember to measure
I need to remember to measure my thumbnail before I estamate a size. Thanks for bringing that point up. I am adding another picture. It is a different bug, but caught around the same time. Pretty sure that it is the same thing, but thought I would ask.

Different bug
Its never too late to measure that pretty pink nail and edit the estimate on each image. Only images of the same individual should be linked together so the latest image should be unlinked.

My nail is exactly 1/2 inch.
My nail is exactly 1/2 inch. Now I can use it as a good measuring stick!
I unlinked the picture and it unlinked all of them. How do I get them back together?
