Gold-Backed Snipe Fly - Chrysopilus thoracicus

Size: w.s. 5/8 in.

Adult sitting on vegetation along the valley of the Mullet River. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CREATURE! Also found one here in Door County on June 17, 1996. Chrysopilus is from the Greek words, chrysos, meaning "gold," and, pilos, meaning "hair;" thoracicus, is from the Greek word, thorakos, meaning "a breast-plate, the chest...from "Biological Names and Terms" by Edmund C. Jaeger..
