Small beetle - Taphrocerus howardi

Small beetle - Taphrocerus howardi
Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, USA
March 2, 2008
Size: 2~3 mm
Quite small and was acting like a fly in its flight.

I suggest...
...Taphrocerus howardi, based on the parallel-sided form, indistinct pattern of elytral pubescence, and rather coarse elytral punctation. Taph. nicolayi is very similar but usually slightly broadened at the humeri. Other sympatric congeners are either more wedge-shaped, less punctate, lack pubescence, or have more distinct elytral spots.

Pretty good field shot of a very small species!

Try the genus Taphrocerus
A difficult genus to get to species.

Look through the Buprestidae
while you wait for one of the beetle experts.
