yellowjackets - Vespula

yellowjackets - Vespula
Perry County, Pennsylvania, USA
I don't believe there are any Dolichovespula species in there...

taken in late September, 07

haha...
This reminds me of a newspaper article I read about 'yellow jacket pong'. I think some entomologist invented this game while he was in college- spread sugar water or another attractant over a ping pong table, wait a few days, and then go out there and hit the wasps with the paddle- I think the point of the game was to get your opponent stung- sounded incredibly stupid, but also ridiculously tempting... And a great suggestion to come back with when people call you a loser for refusing to play those college party games... haha

....
What is that they're drinking ? Is there something there that attracted them ?
Looks like there are a lot of ants around there also.

it is
sugar water that i put out for them. of course, it was the end of the season and they were desperate for food. ALL OF THE VESPULA SPECIES IN MY RANGE WERE THERE! that is : maculifrons, vidua, flavopilosa, vulgaris, germanica, and squamosa. there were a few D. maculata, and V. crabro, but they arent in this photo. D. arenaria was the only species not present.

i do have lots of other images showing multiple species together.

Cool !
I think I might try that this spring.
