Ant Princess - Camponotus - female

Ant Princess - Camponotus - Female
Marin County, California, USA
March 9, 2008
Size: 1.5cm
I saved her from drowning in a pool. Unfortunately this was the only photo I was able to get before she took off.

Carpenter Ant (Camponotus sp.)
Color pattern strongly reminds of Eastern C. americanus - and size does match too. At least a very closely related species.

Website
I found the site I mentioned in my last post, it's called AntWeb.org.

I found a species on there called Camponotus yogi that seems like a very close match (though it is likely going to be impossible to find out for certain).

Carpenter Ant (Camponotus sp.)
Thanks for the reply. I tried looking up the different Camponotus species in the Guide, but it appears all the photos on the site have been deleted (??).

It doesn't appear the that Eastern Carpenter Ant ranges into California, so I'm guessing it is a similar-looking western species. A few years ago I found a website hosted by the California Academy of Sciences (I think) that had photos of many Californian carpenter ant species, though I'm not sure if that site is still up. I'll go have a look.

Camponotus isn't deleted
I put Camponotus in search, and it came up, and here's the guide page for C. americanus.

Couple of common California o
Couple of common California options are C. semitestaceus, and C. vicinus, there are a couple of other possibilities but my money would be on one of these two species.
