Moved
John or Jane - I just got an automatically generated e-mail that this photograph had been "moved from Butterflies." I notice it's still in "Butterflies," so how was this moved from and to the same place? I've seen this before and always wondered what was happening. It's probably something simple that I hadn't thought of, though. Can you explain this to me, or has anybody else even noticed this?

Interesting!
We tried to remember exactly what had happened and seem to recall a glitch when we were moving a number of images from ID Request to Butterflies. We clicked on Move Tagged Images and Internet Explorer started to indicate a move and stopped. We then went back and repeated the process and the move went through. Now that we see the result, it is apparent that the move went through the first time too, even though we had no notification of that. So the repeat process simply identified those same tagged images and placed them again in Butterflies (where they were already located!) Thus the confusing message, but interestingly we were able to generate a message while moving from ID Request, something that normally doesn't happen! We'll have to think about this some more!

Thanks!
Thanks! I never thought about the timed out/glitch possibility. That's happened to me before and I never put the two factors together. That is, it timed out and I ended up sending it twice when it had actually arrived the first time.

Resembles
It resembles a Mustard White - Pieris oleracea, to me. I see in one of my Butterfly guide books that these Butterflies do travel in parts of California, so it might be this kind. Compare yours to this one from the Guide:

White butterfly
We're on the same page - just depends on which book is in hand. I'm using Shapiro's 2007 Field Guide to Butterflies of the San Francisco Bay ... and he uses Mustard White as synonymous with Gray-veined White, has a paragraph on the scientific issues, and punts by putting them into the Latin bag (Pieris "napi complex"). But you and I have the same idea about what this butterfly is. Unfortunately, the picture was taken at a considerable distance, using a telephoto lens ...
