Found this at the New Orleans Zoo near Christmas . There were quite a few of these around the zoo . Sorry about image quality . By the antennae I would guess a male .

I believe maia is the only one in your area.

I would also guess H. maia, but there are quite a few species of this genus in the U.S. not all of which are listed in the guide, and some are quite similar. The caterpillars are even tougher to tell apart!

but maybe Buck Moth - Hodges#7730 (Hemileuca maia)?

There are several confusing ones, but pretty sure Hemileuca

I got as far as saturniidae , but that was it. From some of the other comments on these , it's behavior fit .
