Swamp thing

Swamp thing
Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia, USA
February 16, 2008
Size: 35 mm long
This thing has me stumped. Found two of them while walking along the boardwalk at Okefenokee. It sort of seems like a huge spider egg sac looking at it now, but I had the impression of a moth cocoon at the time. Unfortunately I couldn't reach either one of them to investigate further.

Moved
Moved from Moths. Dave Wagner suggested this might be a spider egg sac, which I'm not sure about, but having a lepidopterist suggest that makes me hesitant to keep it filed under moths.

Not an ID
but could it be one of the structures built by a Purseweb Spider (Atypidae)?

No,
I sure was hoping to find some of those though!
Both of these were attached to twigs maybe 8-10 feet off the ground..
