I'm pretty sure this is a common grass spider. They aren't dangerous. Compare with .

That does look like a good match. I didn't realize they got this big, and I tend to assume that big brown spiders walking around on the ground are wolf or nursery web spiders (I knew the abdomen shape was suspicious, though). I think this was about an inch, legs included.
Incidentally, are sizes given for spiders generally just for the body?

 
Yes
Spider size does not include the palps or legs. From the tip of the head to the end of the abdomen would be the way to measure spider size. However, most people that don't know much about spiders don't know this, so measurments must be taken with a grain of salt....esp. from newcomers to the site.
