Black bee - Xylocopa mexicanorum

Black bee - Xylocopa mexicanorum
Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas, USA
March 18, 2008
Fairly large bees that look like Carpenter bees. Can someone verify an ID for them? They were photographed at the Hans Suter Wildlife Refuge.

ID confirmed - Xylocopa sp.
Superb shots of a jet-black female. Most likely X. mexicanorum, but a confirmation from Dr Ascher would be safer.
At any rate, this one species looks virtually identical to Western palaearctic X. valga, at least in the female gender.
