Ravine Trapdoor Spider - Cyclocosmia truncata - female

Ravine Trapdoor Spider - Cyclocosmia truncata - Female
Rome, Floyd County, Georgia, USA
March 27, 2008
Cyclocosmia truncata, threat display. Normally these spiders are very shy, prefering to hide from danger rather than confronting it. This is not to say that they won't, however, as this individual abruptly showed me. Notice the "rakes" on the spider's chelicera (located directly above the fangs). These are what Trapdoor Spiders use to burrow with.
