Ichneumonid or braconid? - male

Ichneumonid or braconid? - Male
Vermont, USA
June 28, 2005
Reared from a small cocoon that was attached to the outside of a rolled-up sensitive fern leaf. My 'gestalt' sense is that it's an ichneumon, but I'm not sure what I'm basing that on exactly.

Frassed
Moved from Braconid Wasps.

Possibly Meteorus
I asked Dr. Scott Shaw (University of Wyoming) about this image, and he said:

"The resolution of the wing venation is not clear enough for a definitive identification, but from the habitus it looks like another Meteorus to me. I feel pretty confident about that – it does not look like an ichneumonid."

Charley--
pls check other Meteorus, now confirmed, & consider frassing this one

You were right to waver...
Because this guy is a large Braconid Wasp. Crossvein between 1rst "discoidal" and 1rst "submarginal" cells of forewings is visible on the left one, which rules out any Ichneumon.

Thanks!
I'm amazed you could make anything out from this photo. But I'm glad to hear that, because I would have called it a braconid cocoon before I saw the wasp.
