What mimicry! - Laphria saffrana
Ocala National Forest, Marion County, Florida, USA
April 2, 2008
Size: 19 mm
This guy was sunning himself on a fallen piece of pine bark on the edge of a clearing to a grassy wetland. At first, I thought it was a wasp, but upon closer inspection, I noticed only one set of wings. It is a very handsome fly, most distinguished. I know there are great photos of this robber from the Stricklnads, but I couldn't resist putting these photos up and giving FL another record.
