Broad-winged or Ot/te's Sedge Grasshopper - Stethophyma celata - Male
Sandy Run Savanna State Natural Area, Onslow County, North Carolina, USA
June 14, 2007
Stethophyma celatum/celata (not sure which is most accurate) Identified by Steve Hall, NC NHP invert zoologist. These 'hoppers are considered Significantly Rare in NC, and this constitutes a new county record.

Moved
Moved from Stethophyma.

It is Stethophyma celata
The distribution of this species is odd. It is most common in the middle of the country (Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas - leaking into neighboring states), but then pops up here and there near the east coast. The ones I've seen in Nebraska and ne. Colorado are colored a bit more yellowish and lighter, and I remember them a bit bulkier, so perhaps they aren't identical. Regardless, this is not S. lineata, and would be classed as S. celata for now. Stethophyma will probably end up officially transfered to the Oedipodinae soon, but it's status as to subfamily or tribe appears to be in limbo for now.
