I have seen several different species of fly inflating and deflating a bubble at the end of their labium. What are they actually doing? Thanks.

Regurgitation
It is regurgitating its previously enjoyed meals. Just like ruminating cattle, it improves digestion. ;)

I echo Eric's welcome, Steve. I am guessing from Eric's cryptic answer that exactly what this fly is doing is... not very appetizing. If I weren't about to go down to dinner I would conjecture...
