Multicolored Asian Ladybeetle - Harmonia axyridis

Multicolored Asian Ladybeetle - Harmonia axyridis
Dinner Island WMA, Hendry County, Florida, USA
April 8, 2008
I'm not sure if this is a ladybug or not given the lighter orange color and it looks different just behind the head.

Definitely a ladybug
Colors vary quite a bit between species (even within species). The area behind the head is the pronotum, and it generally looks different from species to species.

This one looks to me like the Multicolored Asian Ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis:

Thank you
Thank you for your ID. I had been out shooting photos all day and this was the only ladybug out of about 20 that looked orange. Thanks again.

Not surprising
They're called Multicolored because they vary so much. We have images of orange, red, and even black variations with all kinds of variation in the number size, and arrangement of dots. The only reliable way to recognize them all is the w-shaped arrangement of dots on the pronotum- and even then, differences in size and shape of those dots can be confusing.

I think they sometimes vary their coloration just to annoy the scientists...
