Oak Stump Borer Moth (Paranthrene asilipennis) - Paranthrene asilipennis

Oak Stump Borer Moth (Paranthrene asilipennis) - Paranthrene asilipennis
Rome, Floyd County, Georgia, USA
April 7, 2008
Size: Around 2 inches long.
This is actually a seperate individual from the one in the other photos, but since it came out of the same stump, I figured I'd just keep them together. Unlike the one in the other photos, this one was actually flying around. It only did this when I startled it, though, and always returned to this same stump when it seemed to feel safe again. Interestingly, it flapped its wings so rapidly when in flight that it not only looked, but sounded just like a hornet when airborne. Quite a deceptive moth!
