large black chafer - Geotrupes balyi

large black chafer - Geotrupes balyi
Yoho Lake, York County, New Brunswick, Canada
October 3, 2007
Size: 2-2.5 cm
Observed scrambling up an embankment from a pool of ditch water to a rough woods road, within a partial clearcut. Not sure of id. Antennae are brown, not black.

Moved from Osmoderma scabra.

This is not even in the Scarabaeidae any more. It looks to be a species of Geotrupes, but certainly one of the "earth-boring scarabs" in the family Geotrupidae.

Thanks again. I can get it do
Thanks again. I can get it down as far as the Bolboceratinae, based on the two choices of antenna colour. Looks like there are few live pictures of these insects in BG.

size, not color of antenna is important
