V. germanica and P. fuscatus - female

V. germanica and P. fuscatus - Female
Perry County, Pennsylvania, USA
they were acually sharing!!! yes, this V. germanica worker succeeded in chasing off all other species(including other germanica) eccept this P. fuscatus. this is a GREAT example of how the native species are starting to adapt to this introduced species's habits.

i would love to here any one else's comments/stories about this

Uneasy dinner
One can notice how both "guests" remain wary of each other when eating - otherwise they wouldn't be Vespid wasps ;-).
Bigger size of the native Paper Wasp must fill the Yellowhacket with respect for it. Maybe the rusty color reminds it of the European Hornet too, who is its worse and most feared enemy in their common Eurasian homeland.

very interesting!
yes.. now that i think about it that was a rather large P. fuscatus... do you have V. germanica where you live? i am interested to find out that thier natural enemy is V. crabro... there were no V. crabro at this feeding area, and the germanica never came into contact with any.

hey vulgarias you were right
hey vulgarias you were right it is this species :)

The German Yellowjacket...
is one of the commonest social wasps in my region of the Lake of Geneva, second only to the Paper Wasp P. dominula. Despite its name, the "common" V. vulgaris comes only in third rank at lower altitude, followed by Vespa crabro.
Of course, that is another matter in the very near Jura Mountains, above roughly 3000 feet, where mixed beech/fir-tree forests dominate. There, V. vulgaris is indeed the commonest, mainly because none of the three others exists (too cold a climate for them).
