Dead Lady Beetle and Cocoon - Dinocampus coccinellae

Dead Lady Beetle and Cocoon - Dinocampus coccinellae
DeSoto, Dallas County, Texas, USA
March 20, 2008
I photographed this on a thistle plant then reached out to touch it, only to have the lady beetle fall into my hand. It had died clasping this cocoon. I kept the picture because I thought it was interesting but never hoped to find out what it was--until I read Andy Boring's comments about the Braconid wasp accompanying this picture under Dinocampus coccinellae. Could this be a wasp cocoon?

Braconid cocoon
Seems likely--take a look at these:

That's pretty neat. Good shot
That's pretty neat. Good shot of it too. I'm interested to know if there were any exit holes from a larva on the Ladybug...

I'm afraid
I didn't know enough to look. At the time, it was just another dead lady beetle. I didn't know that it died under suspicious circumstances, so I didn't examine the body.
