Black and red insect - Arilus cristatus

Black and red insect - Arilus cristatus
Jarrettsville, Harford County, Maryland, USA
May 18, 2005
Size: 1/4 inch
These small insects were emerging from what appeared to be an egg case. They seemed to emerge yellow and red and then turn brown and red, and then finally black and red. They have 6 legs and two long antenna. The egg case was attached to a brick wall and was not noticed until the insects started to emerge. I have no idea how long it was there.

Beneficial.
They are beneficial as predators on other insects, especially caterpillars. They are larger sized true bugs in the family Reduviidae, genus Arilus - there are a bunch of photos in the guide here... http://bugguide.net/node/view/259/bgimage
