What kind of cocoon or egg case is this?
St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida, USA

Size: about 4 cm
I think this was in an oak tree. There are Mantid egg cases around. I wasn't sure if this might be a Praying Mantis case or something else.

Polyphemus moth cocoon?
My guess is some kind of giant silkmoth cocoon (family Saturniidae). I know that polyphemus caterpillars roll leaves into their cocoons, so that is where I'd start. The moth has already exited this one.
