Gray Caterpillar with two red stripes - Phyllodesma
Springfield, Tickfaw State Park, Livingston Parish, Louisiana, USA
April 11, 2008
Size: 3 inches
It was found on a boardwalk railing. Nearby plant-life include Sweetgum, Water Oak, Devil's Walking Stick, Elderberry, Ironwood, Wild grapevine. The red stripes appear when disturbed and fade when resting. It has pods down the length of it's body. Feels like velvet.

Just a guess...
Perhaps a lappet (or tolype) moth. They sure do feel like velvet, don't they? Very cool 'pillars!

Thanks
I know you replied a long time ago, but I never said thanks...so Thanks!

It certainly looks like a Lappet
but not Phyllodesma americana. Wagner, pg 228, says there's a southern Lappet which he calls Phyllodesma carpinifolia, but others call Phyllodesma occidentis, but we haven't seen an image of the larva.

Thanks!
Thanks alot you guys! I released him and haven't seen another before or after him. I searched everywhere for identification of this guy so thanks alot for the help.
