Just wanted to say that it is a interesting looking moth and a nice clear image! You should have no problems getting an ID.

Our first thought is one of the Carpenterworms
in the Cossidae, see Prionoxystus robiniae - Carpenterworm Moth - Hodges#2693 here, for example, but we don't know the species in California.
