I found this specimen in a seasonal pond at a bed and breakfast where I was staying. I identified it using the picture I found on this site, posted by Terry Thormin. It is pictured in a plastic container - I intend to take him home for my personal (live) collection along with two notonecta lunata.

first, welcome to BugGuide!

with water beetles, most of the critical parts for ID are located on the underside, specially between each pair of legs. If you still have this one, perhaps an underside view would get this one determined. Also, if you can list the size, that would be helpful (I'm guessing around 15mm, and not more than 20mm?) A head-on image is also helpful sometimes. But if I had to guess now, I'd say Acilius sp., similar to
