Can it be Subclass Entognatha, Order Protura?
near Kingston, Ontario, Canada
October 16, 2007
Size: 0.9x0.5 mm
This is a better quality picture of a creature I posted before. I hope someone could have an idea of what it is. This little creature I found while identifying sphagnum on a Sphagnum branch deep inside of the mass. It was collected on mineratrophic peatland - Larix laricina - Alnus incana /Sphagnum Woodland. On the left side one can see something like a leg and in front two antennas. Can it be Subclass Entognatha, Order Protura? Or may be immature stage of something else?

Parasitengonae
This is the calyptostatic protonymph of a parasitengone mite... either a velvet mite or water mite. Parasitengone larvae are parasitic on other arthropods. After engorging, they molt into a calyptostatic (quiescent, "pupal") protonymph stage. The deutonymph is usually a free-roaming predator, and then there's another calyptostatic stage... the tritonymph. Finally, the adult is usually a free-ranging predator.

I am not experienced enough to ID this beyond Parasitengonae. Maybe in a few years I'll have more info! :)

My understanding that head is facing shadow. There are two long white structures that looks like antennas. I will get the specimen again and make an underside photo.

Oh yes,
I see what you mean now....I was thinking those were legs.

Antennas and eyes
They attached right to the pointed end of the body. They could be legs as well. And, by the way, with some imagination one can see something like eyes between them.

It is hard to say, a pic of the underside would be helpful... it could also be a mite....

Antennas?
I don't see any antennas. If this is a bug I would say that the head is facing the shadow, right?

It seems so to me.
