I want to say a Crematogaster
I want to say a Crematogaster - queen, it may also be a Formic though I don't know of any that fit that color pattern.

It's a Formica, and obscuripe
It's a Formica, and obscuripes is probably right, but I'm not sure what the queens of the related F. laeviceps look like, or if they even occur in the area. Is that a coastal or inland location?

coastal or inland
I'm about 2-3 miles south of the south end of Puget Sound. Not sure what that makes me...inland, I guess, but not too far from the Sound.

As for the species on this one, I don't even know if we have F. laeviceps in this area. We might. But I *do* know for a fact that we've got lots of F. obscuripes. There are 2 or 3 mounds within 50 yards of my house in the woods, and there are probably 20 or so mounds within a quarter of a mile of the house. I'll try to get some nice mound pictures soon.

So, I'm *leaning* toward F. obscuripes (their coloration is *exactly* like this), but I can't honestly rule out F. laeviceps as I don't know them at all or know if we're within their range.
