Honey Bee Gathering Water - Apis mellifera

We stopped at a little lake or pond and on one area there were about 10 honey bees on the sandy bank. This one seems to be eating something?

I found a list of Seasonal Cycles of Activities in a Honey Bee Colony here, and it does list water gathering as an early spring activity.
