Unknown Wasp - Euodynerus bidens

Unknown Wasp - Euodynerus bidens
Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA
April 20, 2008
Size: See picture, penny size
The wasp was caught around 6 pm around forest vegetation. It was in the same vicinity of some bees and was hanging around some flowers. It is entirely black with white marks on the back. Thanks!

Hornet?
Ok I was doing some research, maybe its not a wasp. I'm thinking a bald faced hornet. http://insects.tamu.edu/fieldguide/cimg346.html

Let me know what you think!

No.
This is a solitary mason wasp, Euodynerus bidens. Looks a lot like a hornet because they are in the same family. This particular species is easily confused with another mason wasp, Monobia quadridens, but the white spot on its "temple" identifies it immediately.
