Ravine Trapdoor Spider (Burrow) - Cyclocosmia truncata - female

Ravine Trapdoor Spider (Burrow) - Cyclocosmia truncata - Female
Rome, Floyd County, Georgia, USA
April 7, 2008
A Ravine Trapdoor Spider (Cyclocosmia truncata) burrow. A large adult female was still living in the burrow at the time the photo was taken. This burrow was located facing east on a dry, shady slope just inside the edge of the woods. A large colony of Cyclocosmia truncata exists deeper in the woods and at a fair distance from where this burrow was located. When compared to the nearby colony, this particular burrow location is rather different in overall terrain, soil consistency, moisture, and temperature levels. Specifically, this area is steeper, less claylike, dryer, and warmer. This probably indicates that while Cyclocosmia truncata seem to prefer certain micro-habitats over others, they are by no means limited to those specific areas.

Hi, Brett-

Nice find and good descriptions of the habitat, etc. (When do have time to sleep?) How did you make the night find -- simply with a flashlight?
